An essential oil can be understood in two ways. The first is chemical. It covers how the oil is distilled, which molecules it contains, which chemotype it belongs to, and which precautions follow from that. The second is olfactory and energetic. It covers how the scent acts on a psycho-emotional level and how the oil is read in the Oriental tradition.
The course teaches both approaches and how they are used together in a treatment session. The teaching is organised around five oil families: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood. The course runs over three months, with six LIVE classes and six Q&A sessions.

All times are Central European Time (CET, UTC+1). LIVE classes run from 19:00 to 21:30, and Q&A sessions from 20:00 to 21:00)
Thu 5 Nov, 19:00–21:30: LIVE class 1

French Scientific Aromatherapy
The French school works from the chemical composition of the oil. You learn how a plant becomes an essential oil through distillation. You also learn how to read an oil's chemical profile and what a chemotype is: why oils from the same plant can differ in chemical composition, and therefore in their uses and precautions.
The olfactory and energetic dimension
The second approach starts from the scent itself. It covers the psycho-emotional effect of fragrance, the alchemy of aromatics, and what the course refers to as the "spirit" of an oil. The course introduces five energy principles from the Oriental tradition: Pô, Tché, Hûn, Chenn and Yi. They serve as a framework for understanding an oil and for using it in a session.
Chemical profile. Which molecular groups characterise the family?
Practical use. Which oils are most important, and which precautions apply?
Olfactory experience. Which physical and emotional qualities emerge through the scent?
Alchemical reading. How is the "spirit" of the oil used in a session?

The first month covers how a plant becomes an essential oil: distillation, chemical profiles and chemotypes, and the body–mind–spirit framework. It also covers common oils that require special precautions: mint, cinnamon, orange, clove and thyme. The month then turns to the Fire family, including its principal oils, their uses and precautions, and the "spirit" of key Fire oils.

This month covers the energy dynamics of Earth and Metal, along with their chemistry, principal oils, uses, precautions and olfactory dimension.
The second part of the month covers the "spirit" of key Earth and Metal oils.

This month covers the energy dynamics of Water and Wood, along with their chemistry, principal oils, uses, precautions and olfactory dimension. The second part of the month covers the "spirit" of key Water and Wood oils.
The course also looks at how bodyworkers can use essential oils in their treatments, with particular attention to Facial Reflexology.
As a participant, you work on three areas:
Identify. Distillation, chemotypes and the major chemical families.
Discern. The principal oils, their uses and relevant precautions, and how essential oils are diluted in carrier oils.
Apply. Clear guidance on how to use the oils safely in your treatments.
The course is for therapists and practitioners who want to use essential oils in their work on a professional basis, covering both the chemical and the energetic side. This includes practitioners trained in Facial Reflexology.

Elske Miles was born in South Africa and has lived in France since 1994. She has more than 30 years of experience as a therapist and educator. Her training spans reflexology, Chinese zone therapy, Facial Reflexology, Traditional Chinese Medicine and the therapeutic use of essential oils. She studied with Dominique Baudoux, founder of Pranarôm International, and has contributed to aromatherapy training programmes in France and the United States.
Elske is a co-developer of the phyto-energetic method. In this method, essential oils are applied to zones corresponding to the body's main meridians and to specific acupuncture points. In 2005, she introduced the method at the National Hospital of Traditional Medicine in Hanoi, Vietnam. She later trained in Vietnamese facial reflexology with Dr. Son and continued her studies with Lone Sorensen. She now runs her own online aromatherapy course in French.

The course is taught by Elske Miles and hosted by the International Institute of Neuro Reflexology. Lone Sorensen founded the institute and developed the Facial Neuro-Reflexology Method.
Essential oils and plant-based oils are part of several of Lone’s treatments, and she recommends specific oils for use with her methods. Elske trained in Lone’s methods, so she knows the treatment context in which these oils are used. She also has a thorough knowledge of what the oils contain, how they act and which precautions apply to them.
In Lone’s view, this knowledge is relevant to everyone who works with her methods. The course gives her students a deeper understanding of the oils she recommends in her treatments: why those particular oils are used, what sets them apart chemically and how to apply them safely. That is why Lone invited Elske to teach the course through the institute.
